Whether you’re on one side or the other of the barrier (the one who wants to “climb” OR the one who “gives good pointers”, it’s crucial to understand that natural performance is not the only criteria that commands (which should command…) the fact that a person will climb the ladder in the workplace.
Today, many studies in psychology have highlighted the crucial importance of the “attitude” that individuals adopt everyday in their personal and professional success.
Here are the 9 attitudes that allow some people to climb to the top:

#1 – They are humble, not arrogant.
Arrogant people often feel that they know everything; that they control everything. The one who expresses humility knows that they still have many things to discover and that they’re in an open position and continue to learn. Ask questions and for help when you need it, rather than letting people think you’ve mastered everything… because you haven’t mastered everything.
Humble people share successes rather than appropriating them. They know that success is (very often) a matter of cooperation with others. By doing so, they make others want to engage with them.
#2 – They try to serve before being served.
The best collaborators know how to lend a helping hand to their colleagues when they need it. Great leaders know how to provide necessary tools to their team, the proper methods and culture for optimal performance. Exceptional companies serve their customers before trying to find out what they can “draw” from them…
#3 – They cultivate their optimism rather than their pessimism!
Optimists have more enthusiasm and more energy. They affect everything that crosses their path: colleagues, bosses, customers, and partners… Optimism makes it possible to try more, to do more, to take (calculated) risks and ultimately to accomplish more. If you don’t develop optimism, you are condemning yourself to sit down and think about what might derail you rather than taking action.
#4 – They don’t spend all their time planning.
Planning is crucial… but it’s useless if it’s not accompanied by execution. It is reassuring to try to foresee everything, but things don’t work like that. Once your plan is well established, get moving, execute your plans and see the effects before (if possible) making adjustments during the process.
#5 – They never stop thinking…
True leaders constantly project, deliver and inspire others, constantly… not only once a month. That means, reflecting, thinking often. Think about what is good for the workplace, teams and customers. Success goes through long-term thinking, not just by executing a more or less short-term plan.
#6 – They are voluntary, they move before others.
People who move up the ranks faster and higher are those who don’t hesitate to take on new tasks that are voluntary tasks that others don’t want to do. They make the effort to get out of their comfort zone even though it makes them (terribly) freak-out. True leaders do not wait for you to tell them what to do, they take the initiative… always.
#7 – They move in full consciousness.
If it’s very important to understand others and make oneself available, it’s just as indispensable to understand oneself and analyse movements that can cross your own path. Especially to avoid projecting our methods of operation and interactions onto others. Someone who doesn’t take time to observe themself cannot really be attentive to others and develop qualities of empathy necessary to lead.
#8 – They work at their flexibility!
The only thing that does not change… is that everything changes all the time! On this basis, it’s fundamental to have the capacity to cope with the evolution that can occur within an organization. The inflexible people slow down (consciously or unconsciously) changes necessary for the development of their workplace… And their own individuality, as well. You don’t want to be these people, so embrace change rather than fearing it and consider it an opportunity rather than a threat.
#9 – They share with others…
The best know that their knowledge and skills grow (exponentially) as they share them with others. Keeping all of that knowledge to yourself like a small treasure will perhaps not impoverish you… but it definitely won’t enrich you either. Share your knowledge with others, help them grow, and accompany them on their own development journey as soon as you have the opportunity.
